Thai Word of the Day: “dtok-jai” (ตกใจ)

“dtok-jai” (ตกใจ) can be used in the following ways:

adjective: is shocked / is mortified

The adjective “dtok-jai” (ตกใจ) is used when we are very surprised and upset by something bad that happens unexpectedly.

Examples:

chan dtok-jai maak dtawn kao bawk chan
ฉันตกใจมากตอนเขาบอกฉัน
(I was shocked when he told me)

kon dtok-jai gap chaak sex nai phaab-pha-yon
คนตกใจกับฉากเซ็กซ์ในภาพยนตร์
(People were shocked by the sex scenes in the film)

phuak-rao dtok-jai maak thee dai-yin waa kao sia-chee-wid yaang ga-than-han
เราตกใจมากที่ได้ยินว่าเขาเสียชีวิตอย่างกะทันหัน
(We were deeply shocked to hear that he passed away suddenly)
