Thai Word of the Day: “rawd” (รอด)

“rawd” (รอด) can be used in the following ways:

verb: to survive

The verb “rawd” (รอด) is used when we manage to stay alive despite an injury, illness etc; or to manage to deal with something difficult or unpleasant.


chan mai roo waa chan rawd rong-rian ma dai yaang-rai
(I don’t know how I ever managed to survive school)

phoo-doy-sarn kae bpaed kon rawd chee-wid jaak o-bat-dti-hade kreuang-bin dtok
(Just eight passengers survived the plane crash)

maw kawng-kao bawk waa man bpen kwaam-ma-hat-sa-jan thee kao rawd chee-wid ma dai
(His doctor says it’s a miracle that he has managed to survive)
